I mean meaningful sequential retell. This year my little first grade buddies have been struggling with retell. Yes, they can retell a story... but not in a very meaningful way. I want them to tell the most important details from the text in their retell. So, to help my firsties improve their retell skills, we have been learning about important vs interesting. During week one of the lesson, I chose Where the Wild Things Are. They absolutely love the story! However, I read the entire story the first day, and separate readings of the Beginning, Middle, and End over the following days, and I found reading the entire book on day 1 really confused some of my students BME writing. They had a hard time not referring to just the specific BME.
So this pass week I read Anansi and the Magic Stick... such a cute and funny
story, that Anansi is always being tricky. My students absolutely loved the
story! I read the Beginning, Middle, and End
on separate days, after each reading my little friends begged for more! After each part my students responded to the text by writing down something interesting and something important. This helped them out so much, at the end of the week they were able to compose very meaningful story retells.... I am super proud...:). I will be continuing this lesson next week with another text. I also made some graphic organizers to support the text, and to guide students thinking during the study of Anansi and the Magic Stick...Feel free to check them out on my TPT. I highly suggest teaching important vs interesting to get students to retell in more meaningful ways... Have a super Weekend!!!!

Well I made it through the first week....As always the first week is exhausting...Being a drill sargent all day....This is how we do this in first grade is repeated like a gazillion times.... Im glad the first week is over. We will continue to practice routines and give gentle reminders of what we do in first grade, but next week I get to introduce stations and begin testing... Mt little guys are really cute...and I have a couple of characters, but their really sweet! Well I am ready to start small groups and teach...I'm feeling really good about my group, omw....I have 20 student...I haven't had twenty students...I always have 25-30..I think 20 is a perfect number...the things I can do...the places we can go!!!! in my Dr. Seuss voice...I'm excited!!!! I'll post pics soon of all our classroom happenings. By the way The Learning Station has great brain breaks on You Tube...Search when you get a chance, their so appropriate for primary grades. Well I hope everyone is off to a great start...Good Luck this yr!Mrs. Wrighthttp://www.blogger.com/profile/03490438248741615665noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3238027940487957960.post-68038455527113075302014-08-20T07:13:00.000-07:002014-08-20T07:13:07.267-07:00Hi from Chicago!!!!I have been on my summer hiatus long enough....I have enjoyed my summer with family and friends...Its been great!!! I went to Georgia for my family reunion, and I went on a girls trip to Cincinnati!!! I have enjoyed waking up and drinking coffee to my hearts content...by the way I love COFFEE!!!! I could drink it all day if you ask me... and because of this love my oldest bought me a personal coffee maker... he said ma...you go to Starbucks everyday...which was true...make it at home and you could save money and have it anytime you want...boy..oh boy...I love making my own coffee and he was right I am saving tons of money...5 bucks a day can add up... Anyhoo I just loved my summer, the weather here in Chicago has been perfect mid 70's to low 80's just absolutely perfect!!!! Well I am back and I promise to be a better blogger this school year...last yr was so busy for me as far as work goes.. In Chicago they had closed 50 plus schools, and relocated existing schools to closed school buildings, and my school was moved to a new location... It was a really rough transitions...the parents and community met us with much resistance...It was hard, and very exhausting... So, I think this year will be better tensions have died...wish me luck!Mrs. Wrighthttp://www.blogger.com/profile/03490438248741615665noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3238027940487957960.post-49973073217634459092014-06-18T06:19:00.002-07:002014-06-18T06:19:06.636-07:00Summer Reflections and Relaxations!!!!!I love, love summer the weather, time with family, and traveling! I also use summer to reflect on the year I had with my students. I had such a great class this year, you know we get different classes from time to time, and this year was one of those rare times for me. My students were eager to learn, and just a great community of learners. However, as I reflect, I don't think they were any different from other students in the past, what I think was different was me!!! I used the first six weeks of the year to build a classroom community built on respect, I also modeled all expectations and procedures. Yes, it was me...I thought it was them all year, but it was me. We must train students well, before we can teach them effectively!!! I think I get better and better each year. I love teaching first, and I am sure next year I'll still have a great class!!!! Haopy Summer All!!!! I am going to enjoy and plan for next yr!Mrs. Wrighthttp://www.blogger.com/profile/03490438248741615665noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3238027940487957960.post-80251124146652326492014-01-11T08:35:00.000-08:002014-01-11T08:35:19.993-08:00What a Week!!!!Hi All,

It's been all kinds of CRazy weathere here in Chicago, we started the week with two days of - below temps with high wind chills....brrrrr. Can I say how happy I was that school was canceled for two days. Although I was excited to see my little firsties, I didn't want anything to do with that wind chill!!!! I stayed hibernated for two days. I also gained a pound or two yikes!!! I have successfully lost 50 pounds with regular excercise, and eating right, so hopefully the weather will be betteer, so I can geet out to the gym. Anyhoo, our week went great, the first day back, I felt confused all day, and 10 students wer out, just a weird day. The next two days I was back, really back (mentally), and we got a lot accomplished. I am such a graphic organizer person, I love creating graphic organizers to accompany text. I create graphic organizers that support textual evidence and close readings. I love when my students really think deeply about text. This week we read Amazing Grace, I just love that story. My kids made lots of connections to her. I love the fact that she is a girl, who wanted to play the role of Peter Pan! Girl Power :) If you never read the text, its definitely a must read.

We discussed her inside and outside traits, as well as our favorite part, and we answered text dependent questions. My first graders loved the text and the activities. If your interested and doing those activities with this book go check out the graphic organizers in my store! click here
Happy Saturday!!!!!!!!!!!!! I am going to get out to the mall with my fam, and hopefully end up at the Cheesecake Factory, my fav restaurant, and they even have a slice a cheesecake made with splenda...how sweet!Mrs. Wrighthttp://www.blogger.com/profile/03490438248741615665noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3238027940487957960.post-74495713609947563602014-01-06T05:12:00.003-08:002014-01-06T05:12:58.186-08:00A little Snow Day!!!!!Hi Friends,

Today we have a snow day...it feels colder than 20 below here in Chicago...brrrrrrr. So, the district decided to keep the kids in, its way to cold to have them out. I am going to use this day to plan and reflect. I don't know about you all. but when January hits, I feel like I am running out of time. So much more to teach!!!!! In my class I am implementing math workshop. My students do three rotaions math with the teacher, partner math, independent math. My district uses Everyday Math, because its a spiral program the workshop really helps me work in small groups with my little darlings. I usually complete the math boxes in small group since it covers previous skills. Math with a partner is usually a math game... like top it... I use card games and dice games. I try my best not to make copies...I hate wasting paper...thats another post. I am almost a paperless teacher. Students use markers and white boards to record and tally scores. Independent math is usually the lesson page and/or a supplemental worksheet. I usually give my students lots and lots of addition practice, by the end of the year their addition experts. I find that daily addition practice, helps increase their number sense knowledge, and it shows on MCLASS!!! I currently have a small group doing double and triple addition with no re-grouping. I plan to start them with regrouping... not required...but it won't hurt. I believe in pushing them to their fullest potential. I wish you all who are back at work a wonderful bless day! I'll be in my pj's drinking coffee, and staying warm. Please checkout my math centers...Superbowl Math and Literacy Centers! click here!!!!
I have been busy working on daily 5 in my class. I have attempted to implement daily 5 two years in a a row, and I normally return to stations. Although I love the Sisters concept, it just never works for me However, this year I have found a way to make it work for me and my kids. Yes!!!!!!! So I wanted to share just in case anyone else has struggled with implementing the Daily 5. I only do three rotations a day, however in between each rotation is either out word study block, read aloud, or shared reading block. I teach the lessons students do the assignment, and then we go back to Daily 5 rotations. Each time I send them back they seem more focused, and when they start getting off task its usually just about time to bring them back. So, I love it, and it is working like a charm with 32 First Graders!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

We have been studying apples, Johnny Appleseed, Pumpkins by the way I brought in a pumpkin yesterday, have you ever planned a 1 day lesson that really should have been a weeks lesson...Yes, that happen to me I planned pumkin adjectives... all students got to touch and pick up the pumpkin, I planned a pumpkin disection each student worked with a partner to pick seeds out, before that we guess what we thought was inside...yeah even talked about and formalated an hypothesis, we even tasted pumpkin chocolate chip cookies....yes we did all of that and more we even wrote about pumpkins... by the end of the day my students were needless to say CRAZY!!!!!!, but its my fault...don't know what I was doing planning a Pumpkin Day....Mrs. Wrighthttp://www.blogger.com/profile/03490438248741615665noreply@blogger.com2tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3238027940487957960.post-31943313360790476482013-06-20T13:40:00.000-07:002013-06-20T13:40:59.348-07:00finally the last day of schoolHi All,

This week my first graders focused on summarizing the text. I used the strategy Sombody. Wanted. But. So to help my firsties summarize the text. We read The True Story of The Three Little Pigs, and summarized the text on a postcard to share with our families. The postcards turned out super cute. I made several graphic organizers that we used out the week to help us compose a summary. I forgot to take pics of the postcards, but have included a postcard freebie for you click here. My first graders were excited to share the text with a family member. I also have those graphic organizers in my TPT store click here to get yours. All sales will support summer reading books for my students. I work in a very low-income area, and I am raising funds to purchase books for my class to take home for the summer.
Each day my first grade class starts out wonderful!!! Everyone (many) are attentive. I am able to meet with groups, my balanced literacy approach is text book perfect.... Then the afternoon comes....I don't know if their just tired or is it everyday math! I have been following everyday math to a t, and I realized that my students have no time to master concepts. This spiraling curriculum is a bit much. Everyday it's something new... Although math boxes review previously taught concepts it's about four or five concepts that my high students can tackle, but it's way too much for my low students. I am going to re-vamp my math practice in the afternoon... Can anyone share how they implement math. Is anyone else students having tough afternoons??? Thank God for 3 day wknds
I made a promise not to do any school work, and I kept it!!!!! surprisingly. However it is time for me to create my statiions for next week and all my winter theme lessons. I love teaching first grade, because of all the fantastic read alouds, and cute projects that the kids get really excited about. I miss my students now (3 weeks is perfect). Well wishing all my fellow teachers and blog buddies a Happy New Year!!!!!!!
We also had Junior Achievement Day, and Pepsi co came out to teach about recycling. My students loved learning new things, but boy were we busy. We also were busy learning about sneaky e, and my little darlings created sneaky e posters on Friday, which were ruin shortly after, when our CEILING!!!!! came crumbling down just before dismissal. We had a water leak.... no one was hurt, but our super cute sneaky e posters :(. Imagine the chaos in a class of 27 six year olds........Oh yeah, it was everything you could imagine and then some. Here are a few pics of our activities minus our sneaky e posters. Also here is a pic of my little guy going to his choir performance, let me tell you this boy loves to sing, he was so proud :)
